Jacques Genin makes the best pot of hot chocolate in Paris. One sip of his creamy heaven-sent beverage makes me almost wonder why we equate France with wine.
I am besotted. With tears pooling in my eyes, the thick chocolaty libation, both complicated and one of life's simple pleasures, glides down my throat.... and I am complete.
Aztec warriors were served chocolate during their most important war ceremonies. The chocolate drink helped them prepare for war. Maybe that's why chocolat chaud gives me strength. Sustenance. A reason to live. Another reason to return to Paris. And a reason to return to Chocolaterie Jacques Genin.
Monsieur Genin also makes to-die-for caramels and chocolates in his perfectly irresistible shop. If you're in the Marais, stop by to enjoy a cup, a nibble, or both! The beautiful space is large and comfortable. Part of the charm is watching his manicured assistants (wearing white cotton gloves!) dole out perfectly wrapped treats. He's also known for his Paris-Brest and millefeuille but I can't claim ownership since every time I walk into his salon, I order the hot chocolate -- even in the dead heat of summer. Chocolate nirvana.
Pray for me!
